    Promenade Palladium
I stayed at a "five-star" hotel in March, where the rooms were miniscule and while I had an angled view of the beach, overall, it was no better than a modestly-priced hotel anywhere. It did have great amenities, being directly across the street from the beach in Leblon, and probably one of the best spas around. The Promenade Palladium, which is four blocks further down and two blocks from the beach in Leblon, which I consider the best, coolest neighborhood in Rio, is one-third the price. I must say that the staff was really outstanding. I was a bit ruffled when I arrived as my bag did not make it on the flight from Newark, and the staff at Promenade Palladium couldn't have been more helpful and sympathetic. The breakfast, which is included, is a huge buffet in a very nice restaurant atmosphere, plenty of food, all excellent quality. In one small area of the dining room there are four PCs (you buy an internet card for like eight bucks an hour). The room itself was very big, and the bathroom outstanding, with a very large shower, nice counterspace, plenty of closets and drawers too. And super, super clean! The only drawback was the mattress--the springs attacked me and left my back seriously uncomfortable. But the minute I mentioned it to the manager, she immediately took care of the problem and discounted my bill for the discomfort. The hotel is on Rua General Artigas, one block away from Ave. Ataulfo Paiva, a nice main street. About eight blocks in the opposite direction there is Leblon Shopping and Rio Design Shopping. There are great restaurants everywhere, my favorite is Azuka and Sushi Leblon, only a few blocks from the Promenade Palladium. Leblon is very central. You can get to Ipanema on foot along the beach avenue (Delfim Moreira) and admire the gorgeous bodies hitting you everywhere. Copacabana too is close and taxis are very cheap. I'm from New York where taxis are a way of life and where we are spoiled in terms of fares. So, the fares there are excellent....More
